The
New Orleans Psychoanalytic Society was organized in October of 1953 and
accepted as a Constituent Society by the American Psychoanalytic Association
in May of 1955. It began training candidates under the auspices of the
New Orleans Psychoanalytic Training Center under the sponsorship of the
Washington Institute. In 1957, it was recognized as an independent institute
by the American, the first institute in the South, and the 13th in America.
It has graduated more than 70 psychoanalysts who practice in various parts
of the country. It owes its success to the many outstanding analysts from
other institutes who helped, and particularly to Dr. Bertram Lewin, who
visited often and became, in effect, the "Grandfather" of the
Institute. He was revered by all of the faculty members and candidates
who had the opportunity to attend his seminars.
The Institute has regularly trained candidate classes, along with taking part in psychoanalytic educational in the community, including study groups of teachers, psychiatrists, ministers, anthroplogists, and child-care professionals. The New Orleans Society has sponsored an even broader set of activities, including film studies, interdisciplinary and applied analysis study groups, to which a number of members of the faculties of Tulane and Loyola belong. It regularly sponsors classes at the Institute for residents of both medical schools.
The Institute and Society are now jointly creating
a Psychoanalytic Foundation, with Board Members from the community, along
with a campaign to further and expand these educational and scientific
activities.
