Text Box: Curriculum

The basic curriculum includes personal analysis, clinical and theoretical instruction in seminars, and supervised psychoanalysis.

The progression of a candidate usually proceeds in the following manner:

(1) The Training Analysis
The personal training analysis is the foundation of psychoanalytic training. It is conducted by a PINE training analyst chosen by the candidate and its duration is determined by the progress of the analysis.

(2) Seminars
The candidate begins the seminar program in consultation with his/her advisor.

(3) Supervised Psychoanalytic Treatment of Patients
The candidate ordinarily begins the supervised analysis of his/her first patient at the end of Clinical Year I. Also, a candidate must be in the training analysis for a period of time (6 months is suggested) before beginning the first case. Generally a second supervised case may be undertaken after a satisfactory six-month report of the first case has been written and approved.

(4) Graduation
Candidates for full training are eligible for graduation when they have:

 (a) Successfully completed all required courses and seminars;
 (b) Undergone a training analysis;
 (c) Analyzed a minimum of three cases (preferably patients of
      each sex) conducted in 4-5 sessions per week;
 (d) Conducted the required supervisory work, including a case
      carried to the advanced phase of analysis or to the successful
      termination of treatment;
 (e) Written case reports which have been deemed satisfactory.
